Becoming oblates and formation time

The formation process to become an Oblate of the Virgin Mary involves several stages.
During each of these stages, the aspirant or confrere in formation is personally accompanied in his or her discernment and personal growth objectives.

A first discernment

Anyone who feels a call should contact one of our communities. While continuing their studies or work, candidates meet regularly with an Oblate priest. The priest guides the candidate in personal prayer and initial vocational discernment.

The postulate

Candidates who discern a call to the Oblate religious and/or priestly life enter the postulancy. He then begins his studies in philosophy. He experiences community life, a more intense daily prayer life and continues his discernment. This period can last up to two years.

The novitiate

The novitiate year is totally dedicated to deepening Oblate spirituality and mission. We meditate on the life and works of Fr. Lanteri, Founder of the Oblates, and reflect on the meaning of the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. We delve deeper into the Oblate rule of life. A profound experience of prayer, in particular the thirty-day Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius. It is at the end of this year of deepening and discernment that the candidate makes his decision to enter the Oblate family. He then makes his first vows and becomes temporarily professed.

Seminary years and temporary vows

Oblates preparing for the priesthood then begin their theological studies: Sacred Scripture, Church history, spirituality, morality, etc. During this four-year period, in addition to their studies, temporary professed members experience the consecrated life in its personal, community and pastoral dimensions. For those who are called to be brothers (consecrated life, but not ordained priest), the formation program is personalized according to the dispositions of each individual.

Perpetual vows and ordinations

After three years of formation, the young man makes his perpetual vows, receives ordination to the diaconate and, a few months later, to the priesthood. He will either exercise his ministry in a community of his home province, or leave for another country where the Oblate Congregation is established.
